Suffolk County Sheriff Department deputy sheriffs stopped Patchogue resident Jose Lorenti at approximately 12:14 a.m. on Sunday, June 27 after he was caught making traffic violations on Waverly Avenue in Patchogue.

During the subsequent stop, officials said that deputies determined that Lorenti, who had a previous DWI conviction, was intoxicated and noted that he was driving with a 3-year-old boy, 11-year-old girl, and 13-year-old teen inside the car at the time of the traffic stop.

Investigators noted that a blood draw warrant was approved for Lorenti and the results of that testing are pending. Child Protective Services was also notified.

Lorenti was arrested and charged with:

  • Three counts of endangering the welfare of a child;
  • Three counts of aggravated DWI with a child (Leandra’s Law);
  • Felony DWI with a previous conviction;
  • Circumventing an ignition interlock device;
  • Aggravated unlicensed operation of a. vehicle;
  • Multiple New York State vehicle and traffic violations.

“Members of the Sheriff’s DWI Enforcement Team are out on our county’s roads to keep the public safe,” Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, Jr. said. "In this case, they not only prevented an intoxicated driver from causing an accident with another driver or a pedestrian, but they potentially saved the lives of three young children in the vehicle.”
